Book Review
Why or why not you should read When Broken glass floats By Chanrithy Him
For the Reading circles this semester I chose to read the book When Broken glass floats by Chanrihy Him. I chose to read this book because the story line was a lot like another book that I had read and liked. I usually like this style of writing but as you will soon tell, I did not particularly like this book.
During the reading of this book I learned lots of things, one of them being DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. If you procrastinated in this project you would become behind and have to re do lots of work and read more. I personally thought this book was sad, slightly boring and too long. I usually am pretty optimistic but with this book I just couldn’t stand it. It would constantly switch from the past to the present so soon you weren’t sure which was which.
She would be talking about her brother, she had 9 other brothers and sisters so after a while it got confusing, but the really confusing thing was each brother and sister had a nick name because all of there names were so long. Then it would just skip back and forth. This book was pretty serious though. I don’t recommend It to anyone bellow the age of 12, it was serious and long. A young person who was not used to reading long book’s would not even been able to struggle though it. I read a lot and trust me it was very, very hard not to just give up and put the book down.
Another thing that I didn’t like about the book was that she used Thai words for things like Grandpa and Grandma. She had told us the meanings of these words once in the book so the next time you saw it you would have forgotten and not had any idea what it meant. I think that if you liked the book Because of Romek By David Faber you would like When Broken Glass Floats because they are both about real life stories that are sad, and in both of them there whole family dies and they have to start over. I think that if David (Because of Romek) and Athy (when Broken Glass floats) met each other they would be great friends, because I think that they would be able to understand each other in ways that no one else could get.
So over all, I would not recommend the book to readers that like action and adventure because this book has none. My group members had a hard time reading this book too, so I know its not just me. I have nothing against book’s , I love reading but this book was so dull that I lost interest. But that’s because I only like to read adventure novels.
